Fishing has been really good on recent trips. While it was warm, the topwater bite was on, and we were catching lots of 23-26 inch trout over sand in knee-deep water, with a few bigger ones, up to 7 pounds. Now that the cold weather has set in with a vengeance, the bite and patterns are different. We're already seeing fish show up in areas known to produce well when it's cold. On the more negative days, with water temps in the 50s, soft plastics are working best, thrown around the edges of shallow structures lying next to deep basins. When water temps warm back up into the 60s, topwaters are still working well, in the same areas.
I'm no weather man, but it seems to me this is like last year, in terms of it being warmer than normal well into autumn, then turning colder than normal almost instantly. If we have another colder than usual winter, I expect to be posting pics of some really big trout on a regular basis. Still have plenty of days open from December on through the cooler half of the year. |
